iPod Fad Peaking ?

Apple just reported earnings. They sold 6.5 million iPods during the quarter — Awesome ! Well.. that was only 1 million less than Wall Street expected.

Reality TV just peaked.. why not MP3 players too ?
There will always a “next great thing” to take over.

Folks (including me) are comparing the recent iPod craze with the Sony Walkman era of the 80’s/early 90’s. Listening to music on earphones w/ a newfangled portable device is definitely a cyclical thing in this country. That said, the iPod fad is far from over at this point.
Portalplayer, a supplier of chips for iPods that I considered buying today, is getting supremely spanked along with AAPL. Acutally, PLAY’s nearly 20% nosedive is worse.

As a stock that most folks own specifically to gain exposure to iPod success.. PLAY is down big “in sympathy” with AAPL.

I didn’t realize until this afternoon that Apple was reporting today, and avoided PLAY upon learning that fact. The technical (chart-based) strategies that traders like myself use do not allow holding stocks thru big news like quarterly earnings reports. Technical analysis works best in the absence of news.

No positions (and stoked about it)

curious.. will anybody actually watch video on a tiny 2 inch iPod screen, even if it’s made available?

that’s what Apple bulls are banking on for the moment.

i just can’t envision this mobile video thing happening.

(ps. i’ve been wrong before)
